Belize, A Truly Spectacular Vacation Spot!

Central America plays host to tourist at its many Caribbean
destinations. One such lesser known destination is Belize,
located near Mexico and Guatemala. It is a peaceful &
beautiful place with the Caribbean Sea right at its
doorstep. Belize is primarily Creole and its people friendly
and welcoming. This very factor makes it different and
better than other Caribbean destinations which are not so
welcoming.

Belize is English speaking, which makes it a great
destination for people who feel uncomfortable when out of
their element. Some Westerners find it hard to adjust when
they first arrive to Belize since the attitude of the people
is very laid back and relaxed. No one is ruled by their
wristwatch here.

If you are used to the inexpensive destinations of the rest
of Central America, Belize may be a bit of a shock. However,
it is still relatively cheap to stay and play, more so then
many of the other Caribbean Islands. There are many
beautiful resorts here as well as hostels and budget hotels.

If you enjoy the outdoors, Belize is a wonderful getaway.
There are many protected natural habitats here, such as
coral reefs and rainforests. There are hundreds of species
of fish and mammals; this is a naturist's paradise. For
those interested in archeology, Belize highlights many Mayan
ruins that make great day trips. You can find many great
tours that will take you to the ruins and give you detailed
explanations of what they were used for and the rich history
behind them.

Not to be missed is Lamanai a Mayan site with approximately
60 structures dating from 1500 BC. It was a thriving
culture until the Spanish landed. Visiting this site will
involve a 90 minute boat ride. Along the way you will see
crocodiles and an abundant display of bird species. Another
archeological site rich in history is Xunantunich.

You can indulge in snorkelling or scuba diving at the Belize
Reef and the Cayes, which is the longest reef in Western
Hemisphere. Belize's underwater world displays a very
colourful reef and showcases many beautiful examples of
marine life such as tropical fish.

When packing for your trip to Belize, bear in mind that the
weather is hot and tropical year round. Belize is extremely
humid, even more so in the summer months. Shorts, t-shirts,
and bathing suits are necessary all year. However, bring a
few sweaters, as the evenings can get a bit cool during the
winter.

Belize is best visited from November to May or June as the
summer months sometimes get too hot to handle, making visits
and excursions, such as those to the Mayan ruins, almost
unbearable in the hot weather. Also July to November, are
the months of the hurricane and thus best avoided. Belize
City has its own airport which has regular flights from
almost all the major United States and Central American
cities.

Be sure to consider a visit to the small but beautiful
country of Belize. It offers a variety of activities
including just soaking up the sun at the beach, exploring a
terrific underwater paradise, and seeing some amazing
history created by its original citizens.
